When serum albumin levels are low, patients with suspected hypocalcemia may present with a serum calcium level in the "normal" range. This tool will calculate a corrected calcium level for patients with hypoalbuminemia. An ionized calcium level is an additional confirmatory test for hypocalcemia.
.Summary
This tool will calculate a corrected calcium level in mg/dL and mmol/L. The following formula calculates the corrected calcium.
Corrected Calcium = (0.8 * (Normal Albumin - Patient's Albumin)) + Serum Calcium
Note: The formula assumes albumin in g/dL.

Calcium
A number between 0 and 100, in mg/dL or mmol/L.
Albumin
A number between 0 and 100, in g/dL or g/L.
Normal albumin: 4 g/dL or 40 g/L
A number between 0 and 100, in g/dL or g/L.
Possible results
Corrected Calcium (mg/dL)
Strategies for hypercalcemia
- Initial presentation may benefit from volume resuscitation.
- Loop diuretics may assist with renal excretion of calcium.
- Bisphosphonates may also help, especially in malignancy-related hypercalcemia.
