Inadequate acute episodic migraine (EM) treatment efficacy has been associated with an increased risk of new-onset chronic migraine (CM) over the course of 1 year (Lipton et al., 2015). It is suggested that improving acute treatment outcomes might prevent new-onset CM. The Migraine Treatment Optimization Questionnaire (mTOQ-4) is a validated 4-item questionnaire that assesses acute treatment efficacy. The original validation work was conducted on the 19-item mTOQ but subsequent derivations have been studied, such as the mTOQ-4. Items in the mTOQ-4 have been shown to have test-retest reliability and validity, but the TOQ-4 has not been validated as a stand-alone measure.

Scoring & Recommendations

The 4 questions will answer with one of the following:

AnswerPoints

The mTOQ-4 score is calculated by the addition of the selected points in each of the 4 questions and the following results display:

mTOQ-4 ScoreTreatment Effectiveness
0Very poor treatment efficacy
1-5Poor treatment efficacy
6-7Moderate treatment efficacy
8Maximum treatment efficacy

Management

Higher scores correlate to better treatment efficacy and symptom control. Consider modifying therapy if scores are low.
